GI Pipe

GI Pipe

GI pipe is a mild-steel pipe that has been hot-dip galvanized — immersed in molten zinc so a protective layer bonds to the steel surface. The zinc coating protects the pipe from rust, making it suitable for outdoor and moisture-exposed applications.

What Makes a Pipe "GI"?

A GI pipe starts as an ordinary mild-steel (MS) pipe and is then hot-dip galvanized to IS 4736 : 1986 (Amendment No. 1, 1989), with a minimum zinc coating of 360 g/m² (approx. 51 micron), applied to plain-end or screwed-and-socketed steel tubes.

Understanding GI Pipe Rates

GI pipe pricing isn’t driven by steel cost alone — zinc prices move independently and can have just as much impact. Diameter, wall thickness, coating class and order quantity also factor in, so rates can shift more often than expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

The zinc coating. GI pipe has it, MS pipe doesn’t, which is why GI pipe holds up better outdoors.

Yes, but the zinc coating burns off at the weld point, so that area needs touch-up coating afterward to prevent localized corrosion.
